Moving

I guess I should make it official. I am planning to move to Pennsylvania in September.

Last spring I was talking to my mother on the phone and feeling frustrated that it is a 12 hour or more drive to see them in person. Visiting is getting more difficult for me and them. Then she mentioned that someone in the neighborhood was building a new house on their land. I asked her to check to see if they would rent out their old place. It turns out they didn’t want to, but that another place just as close was vacant. The owners are also relatives (like most of the people in the hollow) and they didn’t want to rent to someone they didn’t know. My parents took a look at it and were favorable. It is within their daily walking exercise distance. It has a yard, but the owners mow it. It is on one floor too, a major consideration for me — I do neither “Windoze” nor stairs any more.

It is in rural Armstrong County, PA, near Keystone Lake. The neighboring farm is where my dad grew up had been in his family until my grandmother sold it when she was in her 90s. The new owners raise horses. To give a feel of what it looks like there, this is a photo of my parent’s house from August 2002:

So, will be a change of pace from urban living here in downtown Milwaukee. I have been in this same apartment for 10 years and been in Wisconsin since January 1984. I am looking forward to living in Pennsylvania again although the actual move is a bit of a concern.

Instead of updating this blog, I have been doing a lot of programming to move some of the database work I have been doing on personal computers to the web. That way current clients and I can continue to work together.

It is a challenge, but interesting as I enjoy working with Perl and the DBI and CGI modules. It feels comfortable. I think it is because it is like things I used to do authoring HyperCard stacks.
