End of summer

It has been quite a while since I wrote here. Had a summer cold for a while, then got busy with music stuff and on Friday, August 18, the iBook G4 notebook computer arrived — new toy. Ordered it from Small Dog Electronics, Bode’s photo is posted in their pet gallery.

Been getting used to OS X 10.4 Tiger. The firewall is a bit pickier than on the G4 desktop that is still on OS X 10.2.8 and still deciding what I want to move over to the iBook. Weeded out unused passwords on Mozilla on the older computer today as I looked up ones to use here in FireFox.

Discovered that iChat supports Jabber as well as AIM and .MAC users now. Thought there was something wrong with connecting to gmail chat, but need to remember that the host is talk.google.com not talk.gmail.com. Started using Psi Jabber client. Got frustrated trying to use it on the desktop, but when I discovered that you can do all kinds of things by control-clicking (documentation said to right-click). Despite that M$ Windoze character, I am enjoying using it. You can stay connected to more than one Jabber server at a time.

Cool thinks about the laptop:

  • You can keep on typing away when the electric power goes off
  • It is very quiet
  • Can set it up almost anywhere, like by the window with the best breeze
  • Battery model number is not on the recall list (at least so far)

The weather has been cooperating for doing computer things. It has been rainy and overcast for four days now. It has slowed down the vegetable harvest a bit (not bad). The pink geranium on the front deck stopped blooming when it was so hot. It now has blossoms and many buds showing.

Gave up on feeding hummingbirds. Yellow jackets discovered it and the swarms of them by the entrance was just too dangerous. They seem to be a lot more aggressive than wasps. In addition to bothering the birds, those bees chewed through the threads on the lid, causing the container to leak.
