Mitochondrial Disease Awareness

It is not too late to sign up for the MitoAction Walk, either to participate in person or as a virtual walker.

Read the recent Boston Globe article featuring Cristy Balcells and her daughter Eva:

breathing spell?

My car is still in the garage for repairs. Mother got transferred to the Rehab Care Center on a trial basis, mainly because when she was ready for discharge from the Telemetry ward on Tuesday, she was still not able to engage in three hours of physical therapy per day. She is doing better after two scary incidents. So, I have been at home getting caught up on rest and minor chores.

This morning I spent some time updating one of my dynamic (Perl CGI script) pages:

http://kgraff.net/it/tutorial/styles_pick.pl

I noticed an error in the path in one of the trail of breadcrumbs footer entries, but the major error was that all of the external style sheets that I had referenced on my old UWM personal pages were long gone. That account was closed when someone on the I&MT staff volunteered to take over maintaining the Omnifest Network web pages that had been my responsibility.

Despite the very nice Content Management Systems available that use PHP and MySql, I still like the challenge and flexibility of generating pages with Perl.

brain bleed déjà vu

Most family members and friends have heard this already, but my mom had another brain bleed on August 5. It was about three times bigger than the one she had in April. It was disappointing because she had just discharged the VNA aides and visiting nurses and was doing well at home, only using her cane outdoors.

She had her first ever helicopter ride, which she didn’t particularly enjoy. Flight for Life took her from the local emergency room to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was in ICU for four days then she was transferred to the Comprehensive Stroke Center. Hopefully she will be transferred sometime today to a rehab care center to begin all over with physical, speech, and occupational therapy. Her left side is much more affected this time, a big goal will be to get her walking again.

For Cristy

coq10-creatine-audio-aug-08

I have removed the password protection for this post, not really a big mystery. We needed to do some troubleshooting on the MitoAction.org web site when Cristy encountered a problem uploading an audio file. The problem has apparently been resolved by the Drupal developer and the file is available in the MitoAction blog. We also split it into two files which are linked in the MitoAction Media Center accessible from the drop-down menus. That page contains several embedded videos so might take quite a while to load if you don’t have broadband. You can get around that though by scrolling down to the conference links.
