On Thursday around 1:30 PM a fighter jet screamed over at low altitude. Then it happened again, then another one joined in. This wasn’t very reassuring with the London bombings last week and the post 9/11 burnt in images of jets crashing into buildings.
Turned out it was the Blue Angels who practiced all afternoon, then again yesterday afternoon for an air show today. Apparently I wasn’t the only person to notice, according to the local NBC affiliate, a number of people called the airport.
My instinct when I hear aircraft that close is to hit the floor and cover my head. Must be left over drill learned while growing up during the cold war.
I took a package to the Post Office around noon today. Bastille Days are held at MSOE and Cathedral Square, just across the river. It is just a bit further than River Splash. A band was performing when I went through so I cruised around on the way back then found a shady spot and listened. They had some good blues and played until 1 PM when they adjourned so they wouldn’t disturb a wedding that was scheduled at Old St. Mary’s Church.
I stopped by a cooking demonstration next, then was getting tired so headed home. It was hazy and I got a bit of sunburn on my arms, but not too bad.
